What is Conformity Assessment Schemes?
Conformity assessment schemes are formal procedures used to verify that a product, system, or process meets specified legal, technical, or standards-based requirements before or after it is placed on the market. In AI regulation, they matter because they provide the evidence base for demonstrating compliance with applicable obligations.
In Depth
In practice, a conformity assessment scheme can include internal controls, external audits, technical documentation review, testing, quality management checks, and certification or declaration steps depending on the regime. For AI teams, this means maintaining evidence that the system was designed, tested, documented, and monitored in line with the applicable requirements, rather than assuming compliance can be proven after deployment.
The term is central to the EU AI Act, especially for high-risk AI systems, where conformity assessment is the pathway to show compliance before market placement or service use. It also connects to ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO 27001 as management-system standards that can support structured assurance, and it may overlap with assurance expectations in SOC 2 + AI programs.
